Casting Competition Rules

2018 Heber Outdoor Festival Casting Competition 

Competitors will attempt to score as many points by casting the fly three times to each of the three targets. The targets will have increasing values as the target decreases in size. 

Accuracy

-       Three accuracy targets

o  20-25’ first target

o  35-40’ second target

o  45-50’ third target

-       Casters will cast to three targets at above distances

-       Cast is counted when the line is presented to the target

Bonus

-       Competitors will have one cast at a vertical bonus target after all other casts are complete and time remains on the clock. 

-       Casting the fly through the target will score 500 points. 

Time limit

-       Casters will have 1 minute to prepare 

-       Casters must start fly in hand with no more than 2 feet of fly line beyond the tip of the fly rod

-       Casters will have 4 minutes to complete accuracy and distance

-       If the fly falls off, time will be paused and the fly tied back on. Time will resume when the fly is reattached. 

Scoring

Accuracy

-       500 pts – center ring

-       300 pts – outer ring

-       100 pts – hits the grass

-       0 pts - Miss the target and out of bounds

-       500 pts for single cast at the bonus target

Total score

-       Sum of accuracy and bonus points

-       There are no finals

Tie breaker

-       The tie breaker will be one cast at each of the three targets. The caster with the highest score will be declared the winner. If a second tie occurs, the casters will repeat the previous casts and incorporate a fourth cast at the upright target and continue this process until we have a winner. 

Entry fees

-       Entry fee is $5 per entry form and casting competition

Categories

Men’s amateur– All men 16 and older

Women’s amateur– All women 16 and older

Youth– All kids age 15 and under 

Pro combined men/women– Men and women who are industry professionals or work in the industry. This includes fly shop employees, guides, instructors, company ambassadors, etc. The intent of this is to allow for true amateurs to participate and allow for a greater interest in the event.

Prizes

-       Prizes will be awarded the day of the event if the winners are present

Distance Casting Competition

If time is available, we will allow contestants to compete in a distance only competition. This distance casting competition format consists of three distance casts within a 3-minute time period. The longest of the three casts

Distance

-       Casters will have three distance casts 

-       Out of bounds casts count where the line exists the course

Time limit

-       Casters will have 1 minute to prepare 

-       Casters must start fly in hand with no more than 2 feet of fly line beyond the tip of the fly rod

-       Casters will have 3 minutes to complete 3 distance casts

-       If the fly falls off, time will be stopped, and the fly tied back on. Time will resume when the fly is reattached. 

Distance Scoring

-       Total distance score is the sum of all three distance casts

-       Casters can compete as time allows and does not interfere with the accuracy casting competition

-       The total length of all three casts x 10. 

-       Ex. 100 foot casts is a score of 1000 pts

Judging

-       The competition organizers may modify the course at any time

-       Judges and organizers may compete in their associated categories from above

-       Judging will error on the side of the casters benefit when scoring

-       Judges will work to be consistent in their judging when running the competition

-       Judges will work to provide a consistent course and keep equipment in proper working order to ensure a fair competition
